My first real introduction to the business of writing came at the Florida Writers Conference a few years back. I've been to either two or three of this conference and one Sleuthfest conference, so I'm not an expert by any means.
However, I will say this: if you're serious about getting published or getting motivated about writing, you should set aside some money and attend a conference. The Florida Writers Conference will take place October 23-25 at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary. (In other words, it's the Lake Mary Marriott, but they had to work the word Orlando into the name somehow.)
This year's conference includes two keynote presentations. The first is from James O. Born, a published mystery author who also works for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). He's a great speaker with interesting stories. The second is from Bob Sanders, from Mundania Press, who will talk about the future of publishing. There will also be agents and publishers galore, as well as sessions to help you improve your craft and your understanding of the business. For more information, see the Florida Writers Conference website or blog.
